The Sunshine Underground

We caught-up with The Sunshine Underground before one of their last gigs of the year - the Insomniacs Ball 2 at London?s seOne Club ? and had a chat with the band?s lead man, Craig Wellington, to see what makes him tick.

You have toured all over the UK ? have you had a chance to experience much of the local scenes in each city? If so, what 'scene' did you enjoy the most?
I don?t know how the scenes vary really but Glasgow is always a really good laugh, the people are always really nice and up for a party. We were taken out after our show there to a mad party, which went on.. and on... and on...
What's your favourite song to play live?
'You Never Party'. It was the b-side to our ?Put You In Your Place? single but since that recording we?ve have reworked it and it?s sounding better than ever.
What have been the highest and lowest points of your career so far?
The highlight was probably either our last gig in Leeds at the Met Uni or Leeds Festival. There's something really special about playing Leeds - the gigs are mental and the fans are loyal and always up for a good time. Them gigs were proud moments! Lows? I can?t think of anything really bad that has ever happened to us, we've only ever had a good time and have been very lucky with our success... I?m sure there are bad times around the corner but we don?t? like to think about that right now, were having too much fun!
You have been described as a 'Party band' in a number of articles ? so what makes the ideal party for you?
It's all about the music really, so a good DJ/band mixed with good people and good booze!
Describe what your typical song writing process?
We don't have one, there are four songwriters in the band and we just throw ideas around really until we come up with something we all like. Any of us can start the process and each song has it's own story of how it was written.
What song would you most like to do a cover of?
Anything by Talking Heads. I think they're one of the best bands ever. I might have to convince the rest of the band though!
Festival you are most looking forward to in 2007?
Glastonbury, definitely. It was missed this year and hopefully we'll get our chance to play next year... We?re also doing pretty well in Japan so fingers crossed we get to play Fuji Rock.
Are there any bands you are championing at the moment?
Our fellow Leeds hopefuls.... The Hair, Shut Your Eyes and You'll Burst Into Flames, The Pigeon Detectives, This Et Al and The Officers....
The last gig you went to was...
We've been touring for so long now I can?t remember the last time we had a night off to go and see bands play... That?s mad because I've spent my entire life doing just that. Last one was probably a new band from Leeds called The Officers but that was a couple of months ago, who?re ace.
What?s in your stereo/mp3 player at the moment?
Always listening to Talking Heads - they are amazing. Also listening to The Good The Bad And The Queen, our new demos, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk... the list goes on but they're the main ones really.
