Make: event one
Wednesday 16th November wasn’t exactly carnival weather – but we livened things up with our first full-on Make event: Make Something From Nothing, down at Village Underground in Shoreditch. The venue would be the perfect place to get Yuri Suzuki’s road-tested sculpture booming, with the help of Ben UFO, Spencer, Chunky and Al Fingers.
Outside, we’d let Aussie artist Buff Diss loose with some trademark tape, hitting the whitewashed wall with a load of sound waves. It all led to a giant speaker stack and down into the venue itself, where Yuri’s 2.5 metre sculpture loomed large. Set against the back wall, the DIY system – made from thousands of Red Stripe cans, red tape and a soldering gun – attracted a load of attention as it boomed out the evening’s tunes.
To mark the event, we also pressed a limited edition gatefold white vinyl featuring a classic dub version of Under Me Sleng Teng (the original digital riddim). There were only 200 of these, so if you see one – grab it.
